Validation of High Rate Anaerobic Digestion of Municipal Wastewaters sets out to design and build a pilot scale high-rate, low-temperature AD (HRAD) process for use on dilute municipal wastewaters (WW), building on success of lab scale trials at NUIG. The pilot-plant would then be used to: test the operational resilience of HRAD under varying conditions of organic and hydraulic loading and ambient conditions; validate sludge reduction potential, biomethane yield; undertake mass and energy balance, process and financial modelling of municipal scale deployment to assess feasibility and prospects of lower capital and operating costs. A successful outcome will support the future commercial development and application for HRAD for municipal wastewater treatment and will mark a paradigm shift in the field of wastewater engineering.
